Statistics: from data to proportions

STATAP Statistics opens with pictures of a single variable and gives its longest unit to inference for proportions. This chapter climbs in that order: how a data set is drawn, then how it is described, then how a sample proportion becomes a confidence interval and a significance test. The normal model and the sampling distributions it rests on have their own chapter, From counts to curves.

Decisions and risk

Choosing on what you have seen

STATTwo choices where the obvious strategy loses. At the doors you get one piece of news and must decide what it is worth, which depends on the rule the host follows rather than on what you see. With the candidates the news arrives one at a time, every refusal is final, and the question becomes when to stop looking.

Fitting a line to data

MATHSeven tools that turn a picture of scattered points into a number you can defend, then ask how the number is found, how much of it to believe, what happens when nobody tells you the answer — and finally how to grade a prediction that was only ever a probability. The route runs through geometry rather than statistics, because the geometry is what makes the statistics honest.

Signals and information

The Fourier transform in practice

COMPA signal is a sum of spinning arrows, and every practical way of reading them off costs something the textbook formula leaves out. A finite window smears a tone that does not fit it across every bin; a shorter window buys time and pays in pitch; an average is a filter with a shape of its own; and the last page is the reason any of it is affordable.
